Meet our Environmental, Health & Safety Manager

30 Nov 2020

Ben Armstrong

Ben has 25 years’ experience in the building and construction industry. Ben is an experienced Environment, Health and Safety General Manager skilled in HSE Management Systems.

With a passion for people and risk management, Ben pivoted to the EHS sector of the industry where he has since gained numerous qualifications. Ben is an active member of the advisory council for the Master Builders Association, and the Australian Institute of Health and Safety. Both groups target knowledge sharing of high-risk issues to protect workers in building and construction.

Early this month our project partner, Auswide Corp organised for Patrizia Cassaniti from Touched by Christopher Foundation to visit our Wollongong project to spread awareness and imprints the message of safety in construction. Patrizia’s tenacity and strength never ceases to amaze us as she honours her son Christopher’s legacy.

Touched by Christopher Ltd was established in July 2019 after the tragic death of Christopher Cassaniti, who was crushed by a collapsed scaffold at a jobsite in Macquarie Park. Christopher’s death touched many people in the community and due to the outpouring of financial and emotional support his parents received, they in turn wanted to give back to help other families in similar situations. The foundation offers financial support to these families within a week of losing their loved ones in the construction industry. As of 31 December 2019, there was 166 workplace deaths in 1 year alone.

‘His name should be in safety. When you think of Christopher, I need you to think about safety.’

– Patrizia Cassaniti

More about Ben

How did you get into your line of work?

I started out as a plumber and was asked by a friend of mine to come and run his safety department for his building business as he could see that I had a passion for people and building.

What has been a career highlight for you?

There have been several in my 26 year building and construction career ranging from working on Military bases, Live Prisons, other Government projects. Implementing real initiatives like holding family days at work, Receiving a letter back from the Garrels family (Jason’s Story), but I think what I really get the most enjoyment out of is when I’m taking someone on the learning journey about risk and I see “That Moment” when the penny drops and they get it! I also enjoy when I get that Aha moment too.

Now for the important question… Why Piety Group?

I think the answer is in the question….. “WHY”….. when looking at coming onboard with Piety Group I noticed on the website in the careers section that there was a quote from an author called Simon Sinek who also wrote “Start with Why”. I have read and listened to a lot of his material and if Piety Group can align their vision and values along the lines with Simon, then I’m sure Piety Group and I would be a perfect pairing.
